Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) continues its commitment to community development by empowering its adopted barangay, Sawang Calero, through comprehensive livelihood training programs. Led by the College of Management, Business, and Accountancy, the university conducted a series of hands-on workshops from April 17-22, 2023, at the Community Extension Services (CES) Training Center.

The training program featured the production of popular local food items, Carioca and Veggie Balls, as well as Liquid Dishwashing Soap. Participants, primarily mothers from Barangay Sawang Calero, were taught both the production processes and the essential management skills necessary to turn these activities into viable income-generating ventures.

More than just teaching the basics of production, the program emphasizes holistic support, including assistance in managing income, monitoring distribution channels, and ensuring sustainability. The initiative aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). By equipping the participants with practical skills, the university aims to reduce poverty within the barangay, create decent work opportunities, and promote responsible production practices.

CIT-U’s livelihood training, in collaboration with the College of Management, Business, and Accountancy, seeks to uplift the economic status of the community, offering sustainable solutions to mothers who are the primary caretakers and economic drivers within their households. Through continuous monitoring and support, the university ensures that these initiatives not only boost income but also foster entrepreneurship among the participants.

The partnership between CIT-U and Barangay Sawang Calero exemplifies the university’s dedication to community engagement and its alignment with global sustainability goals, aiming to improve lives and contribute to the development of a self-sufficient, empowered community.
